Entrar Na Água | Go Into The Water - Uma exposição coletiva 3 outobro 2020 - 14 janeiro 2021

Life in Madeira is tied to the sea. Everything we do affects the ocean and the ocean affects us.  We love living on this island and the last few months have demonstrated a fact we normally discount, which is a feeling of loneliness and disconnectedness. On the one hand, we are happy about that and we feel lucky to feel safe. On the other hand, there is a sense of wariness and staleness in our lives.

An island in the ocean is a wonderful place to live as long as you are knowingly connected to the Mainland. During the COVID-19 virus lock down we all had a lot of time to think about this disconnection, both to the land and water, but also within ourselves.

The theme, loosely based on the word ‘pool’, congers up the idea of a place where water gathers. From baths to swimming pools to rock pools to the ultimate: the ocean itself. All these bodies of water evoke in us a feeling, whether it is a sense of calm, an excitement to jump in, the wonderment of the aquatic world to a sense of fear. This says as much about water as it does about the person entering it. The artist captures these moments in time then it is the viewer who brings their emotions to the image to ‘complete’ the work.

"Ma" by Kazumi Taketomo 19 September 2020 - 14 January 2021 Loja 04

‘Ma’ in Japanese means ‘a space in between’.  It is quite a Japanese concept of the relationship, communication and space. and another one is ‘that moment’ or ‘the moment’ as Taketomo captures the moment from the daily life but somehow what that moment meant to her specially....

While I'm taking a walk or spending my time at tea houses in my home town Kyoto, I take shots of my favourite moments with a camera of my heart.

I etch those intriguing moments of daily life in my mind. Those scenes, people, daily occurrences which we take them for granted are indeed the result of many coincidences and be projected in front of my eyes. I find some kind of connection with my life style, my favourite things, my memories, and my inner world within those precious moments. They also become (form) new world as my art work.

This is my second exhibition at RESTOCK Gallery.  I am hoping to create another chance to connect to viewers through my work beyond physical and cultural distance.

"The Chair, where someone used to be"

“The Chair, where someone used to be”

a group exhibition by

Karen Bradtke, André Moniz Vieira, Vulindlela Nyoni and Siphiwe Cele

Constructing a chair is a very complicated process and involves solving ergonomic, technical and structural issues.

A chair allows a body to rest and depending on the configuration of the chairs, encourages conversation between occupants or to discourage conversation only to be spoken to.

A chair is also a metaphor about human abilities and limitations. Chairs represent people. They represent the presence and the absence of being. They represent relationships.

Up until March 2020 there were things and people that were part of our daily landscape. Suddenly they disappeared. Viewing the streets with closed shops, empty parks, having weekends without gathering with family, birthday parties without friends, we missed the people we used to have, the place where we used to be. Even though technology helps to connect people and to communicate with close ones, we also live with people who do not appear on computer screens. With this pandemic we all experienced our existence, presence and absence.

"A Cadeira" onde alguém costumava estar...
