Horizons in Nature - a group exhibition

Inspired by the nature that surrounds us in the archipelago of Madeira, RESTOCK has invited a variety of local artists to participate in an exhibition based on this theme and, thus, title for the exhibition. The artists exhibiting in the exhibition are: David Fransisco Helena Jardim Jose Zyberchema Karen Bradtke Lize-Mari de Abreu Luis Filipe Vasconcelos Miguel Ângelo Martins Miguel Leitão Jardim The horizon is the apparent line where Earth’s surface and the sky seem to meet, most obvious over the sea or a flat plain. [Wikipedia] There are true/geographic horizons, visible horizons, and artistic/photographic horizon lines. There are also symbolic horizons where the horizon symbolises calm, reflection, openness, etc. and metaphors for the future, new beginnings, etc. Also one could contemplate representing concepts of emptiness and negative space as in Anish Kapoor’s void sculptural works.

TWO | DOIS - a group exhibition

 

This group exhibition is called TWO or DOIS at RESTOCK Gallery.

 

Each artist presents two works separately or some sort of duality within one artwork.

It is a simple concept.

 

The intent of this group exhibition is to expose local artists and feature works from our collection.

Girls with Guns Series

These works and others like them were created for a group exhibition titled Pulp Fiction in Durban, South Africa in 2015. Some of the works were sold so they have been replaced.

While reading up on what ‘pulp fiction’ I found this image from The Tin Ear and it inspired me to look for images of tough women characters from films who were holding guns. They are images taken from the Internet of actresses like Joan Crawford, Natalie Wood, Peggy Stewart, and Jane Mansfield. The text was found by Googling quotes from film said by women. I then matched the quotes to the images using Photoshop.
