O Sonhador | The Dreamer 4 July - 12 August 2025

We want to honour a great artist and dear friend, Pascal Oliveira, who is known as Pascal Errante, who passed away all too soon in April. The exhibition will present larger works from his atelier along with collected art books and more that span a lifetime. At times we sit at the gallery and think that Pascal will stop by soon and present us with his latest works and then suddenly realize that that will never happen again. All our waiting is for nothing. Karen and Claus

‘Connected’   when a point connects to another point


Connection has always been one of the main themes of my work.

We are somehow all connected, directly or indirectly, consciously or unconsciously, although it's quite rare to really feel the connection with something.

When it happens it creates inspiration.

It could be a person, a place, smell, a word, colour, a picture, etc.

Sometimes these things recall a certain memory. They can go beyond time.

my hidden creatures

 

I’m the witness of lonesome creatures of mine.

My dearest cohabitants are extremely honest and sensitive.

They live in a dark peaceful place.

They are helpless but not hopeless.

They are ugly but charming.

Their twisted arms are looking for a cuddle and their tangled hair is longing for a gentle stroking.

The tears behind the smile, the silent cry. 

They are mute but speak with their eyes.

 

I meet those creatures when I have the urge to draw. They are normally hiding inside of me.

Drawing always was a channel to connect with them. Sometimes I see them as visions, and sometimes they come out as figures from the lines I draw.

They exist hiding within my consciousness and are unleashed by the impact of waves of emotions. They are much more honest, sensitive, and intuitive than I am. I normally try to block the negative emotions or pain to keep my mind in peace. In reality I must be still feeling them. I suppose those ignored feelings emerge as images and make me recognize that they exist. 

I live with them and they live with me.

 

 

 

As minhas criaturas ocultas

 

Sou testemunha das minhas criaturas solitárias.

Os meus queridos coabitantes são extremamente honestos e sensíveis.

Vivem num lugar escuro e pacífico.

Estão desamparados, mas não desesperançados.

São feios, mas encantadores.

Os seus braços retorcidos procuram um abraço e os seus cabelos emaranhados desejam uma suave carícia.

As lágrimas por trás do sorriso, o choro silencioso.

São mudos, mas falam com os olhos.

 

Encontro essas criaturas quando sinto urgência para desenhar. Eles estão, normalmente, escondidos dentro de mim.

Desenhar sempre foi um canal para me conectar com eles. Às vezes vejo-os como visões, e outras eles surgem como figuras das linhas que desenho.

Eles existem escondidos na minha consciência e são libertados pelo impacto das ondas de emoções. Eles são muito mais honestos, sensíveis e intuitivos do que eu. Normalmente tento bloquear as emoções negativas ou a dor, para manter a minha mente em paz. Na verdade, devo continuar a senti-las. Suponho que esses sentimentos ignorados surgem como imagens e me fazem reconhecer que eles existem. 

Eu vivo com eles, e eles vivem comigo.

À PROCURA DA NUVEM PERFEITA– Iconografia Introspectiva de Pascalqb 20 de marco ate 22 de maio


À procura da nuvem perfeita, serviu como mote para reencontrar elementos iconográficos espalhados aqui, ali, acolá. São elementos que entram e saem da minha vida, consoante o estado de espírito, num determinado espaço físico, e ou, temporal. A nuvem perfeita, está nas suas imperfeições.

“Ele chegou e ninguém lhe ligou importância. O mundo continuou atarefado como sempre, embora houvesse alguns seres mais atentos. Enquanto o problema e a preocupação se começavam a espalhar por todo o lado, as recomendações de distância social e de higienização faziam cada vez mais sentido. Cientes das fragilidades do nosso modo de vida, refugiámo-nos como eremitas, acabando com isso por fazer ampliar pequenas irritações quotidianas e aumentar o nervosismo e a desconfiança no outro. Atirados para esta solução provisória sem rede, mas com wi-fi, vimos multiplicar as solicitações enquanto os problemas se agigantavam. Às boas intenções que acalentávamos no início sobreveio uma realidade espinhosa. Depressa vieram os pesadelos. Apesar das notícias de experiências transformadoras de outros foi difícil reorganizarmos o quotidiano e comunicar só à distância. Foi com a ajuda de castelos feitos de histórias ou de cartas de jogar, e com a continuação de exercício para corpo e mente que conseguimos superar as dificuldades. Enquanto desejávamos ardentemente um destino diferente, aventurámo-nos a fazer coisas incomuns. Entre o peso da responsabilidade e a vontade de descoberta fomos levados a nos conhecer melhor a nós próprios. No fim, apesar de forçado a criar um oceano entre “ o mim e os outros”, o isolamento propiciou a maturação e concretização de ideias, e a abundância de inspiração. O segredo está no desassossego como catalisador de atividade, e assim evitar o desconforto de se sentir cativo. Deste percurso afortunado resultou esta viagem singular”.

About my work:

The set of works on display is based on the practice of registration on paper.
I focus on the technique of watercolor, but I explore transparencies, materialities and expressions with other techniques: drawing, collage and embroidery. I integrate several elements according to their visual strength (line, texture, matter) and transform the support in space to tell stories that are built with lines and dots, rhythms and movements. Paper becomes the place of gesture and heart. And so the affections take shape and a universe of emotions is born in the interaction of several elements: water-color-paper-air-lines-fabrics.

"Adelina and I" is the name of the exhibition. Adeline, it's my mother. I'm me.
In other words, the world you gave me, Mother!

"House is NOT Home" by Andorinha 5 April - 11 June 2019




Falar em profundidade sobre a distância poderia consistir numa tarefa muito complexa e morosa, mas é sabido que vários artistas trabalharam e continuam a trabalhar acerca deste tema. Talvez a construção de imagens consista num meio tão eficaz como a linguagem para explorar esta ideia.
Refletir sobre a noção de distância, por palavras ou através de imagens, pode servir para compreender o que significa a proximidade e isso implica necessariamente colocar em perspetiva a distância física e a distância emocional.

A minha proposta para a residência artística que realizei em Salzamt, na cidade austríaca de Linz, nasceu de uma necessidade de deixar o meu lugar para poder criar mais e melhor. Esta é uma necessidade que sinto em vários momentos, que sinto esporadicamente, como se de um ímpeto se tratasse. 

"É preciso sair da ilha para ver a ilha, não nos vemos se não saímos de nós" (José Saramago).

Na verdade, não poderia ter concretizado a viagem à Áustria num momento melhor. Passei o mês de Dezembro em Linz, um período em que todos se reúnem e em que todos se reencontram, uma época em que quase todos regressam a suas casas para passar as férias de Natal e estar em contacto estreito com a família.
Foi nesse contexto, distante de casa, que comecei a questionar a noção de "lar", partindo até do simples facto de ter sido capaz de me sentir “em casa” na casa onde vivi durante aquele mês de inverno. 

O que é realmente a nossa casa e o que é que isso significa?

De onde vem e em que é que consiste a sensação de “casa” que somos capazes de construir, mesmo em lugares distantes dos nossos lugares?



Speaking in depth about distance could be a very complex and time-consuming task, but it is well known that a number of artists have worked and continue to work on this subject. Perhaps the construction of images consists of a medium as effective as language to explore this idea. Reflecting on the notion of distance, in words or through images, can serve to understand what proximity means, and this necessarily entails looking at physical distance and emotional distance.


My proposal for the artistic residency that I held in Salzamt, in the Austrian city of Linz, was born of a need to leave my place in order to create more and better. This is a need I feel at various moments, which I feel sporadically, as if from an impetus.

"It is necessary to leave the island to see the island, we do not see each other if we do not leave" (José Saramago).


In fact, I could not have made the trip to Austria at a better time. I spent the month of December in Linz, a time when everyone meets and meets everyone, a time when almost everyone returns to their homes to spend Christmas holidays and be in close contact with the family. It was in this context, far from home, that I began to question the notion of ‘home’ starting even from the simple fact that I was able to feel ‘at home’ in the house where I lived during that winter month.

What is really our home and what does it mean?


Where does the sense of ‘home’ that we are able to construct come from, even in places far from our place?

Paintings by Tatyana Abramova in Loja 2 18 - 28 March only







Abramova is constantly reinventing her work, crystallising her artistic style. She finds inspiration in the works of Abstract Expressionism, Russian Avant-Garde, Suprematism. Rethinking suprematist compositions, Abramova aims to express her ideas about landscape through simple local shapes and vivid colour pallet. Abramova is influenced by contemporary minimalism that emerges from the clash of local composition and complex colour, opening new possibilities for interpretation. In her compositions, Tatiana looks for details, trying to define a figure, landscape, still life, through the nuances of lines between lightness and darkness. The artist works fast and impulsively, surrendering to the moment. Abramova enjoys experimenting, absorbing new ideas, new people and places that influence her work. Bold and very individual combination and colours, directly continuing and developing the ideas of such masters as Mondrian, Kandinsky, Malevich, Klee and Diebenkorn, make her work merit close attention. Tatyana Abramova was born in 1982 in Kazan, Russia. In 1999 – 2005 Abramova studied Architectural Environmental Design at Kazan Architectural and Building University. It was here that she was first introduced to architectural planning, composition, fine art and sculpture. She became more and more interested in painting, which was the first step towards her career as an artist. After graduating Abramova worked in architecture planning, interior design and graphic design. She pursued her own creative work, and gradually it became her main occupation. She had her first solo exhibition in 2013 in Moscow, followed by several shows in St Petesburg, Russia, and Germany. Tatiana works in the genre of abstracted landscape, she uses mainly oils. She also experiments with watercolour. Abramova’s work is in private collections in Russia, Europe and North America.

Education:
In 1999 – 2005 studied Architectural Environmental Design at Kazan Architectural and Building University.

Exhibitions:
A participant of the Fourth Edition of the prestigious 'Royal Arts Prize Exhibition 2017' at La Galleria Pall Mall, London.

An exhibition of paintings by this German-born Madeira-based artist. Her art has turned more into the abstract and sometimes metaphysical. Her special ability is intuitive painting in a gestural expressive way.


Bettina Charlotte’s career as an artist began after a long life of exploration. Although she has traveled around geographically too, Berlin/ Germany had been her base for 54 years – in 2013 this has changed as she decided to move to the Portuguese island of Madeira. 

Before starting her artistic career Bettina Charlotte has explored different professions: she travelled the world as flight attendant for Lufthansa, she learned to be and worked as professional photographer, studied adult education and worked with adults for many years, was self employed and worked as systemic life coach in Berlin, Germany – these professions have given her a wide horizon of different elements of life. Because of her constant drive to be creative, art has always accompanied her during times of other professions and in 2013 she finally decided to work as full time artist when she moved to the island of Madeira to be part of the local artist community.

Perhaps because of all this together–getting to know so many earthly professions–her art has turned more into the abstract and sometimes metaphysical. Her special ability is intuitive painting in a gestural expressive way – she calls it “The Art to Listen to Your Heart” which she also teaches in workshops in Berlin/ Germany and Funchal, Madeira.

Are you curious to paint from your innermost being - to find out which treasure is hidden inside yourself to create beautiful pictures? Your intuition will lead the way, along with some guidance in techniques and theory. There is usually a mix of beginners and advanced participants, all are welcome.



When: First workshop on Saturday, 28 April and then each last Saturday of the month.

Time: 2 to 5 p.m.

Cost: 50.00 per session. If you book 3 sessions and pay in advance the cost is 120.

Includes all materials: acrylic paint, charcoal, coloured chalk, ink, pastels, graphite, strong paper in different colours, different tools like spatula, paint brushes, pallet knives and more.

Sibusiso was born in Umlazi, a township near Durban and was tutored 
by the late Trevor Makhoba (1956 - 2003).

Sibusiso has exhibited mainly in Durban but also in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

His works are always comments and observations of life in South Africa but in a unique 

and very individualistic way.

This body of work explores the view from my studio, looking out over the 4th largest harbour in the Southern Hemisphere, operating 365 days of the year, 24 hours a day, handling over 30 million tons of cargo a year, from about 4500 commercial vessels per year* - it never sleeps!

Despite this bustling activity and never ending action in the harbor, it and the city come across almost docile and silent. The ever-changing weather, light, atmosphere, clouds, sunrises and sunsets offers a lifetime’s worth of opportunities for sketching and painting this one subject. I look forward to seeing how this body of work develops.

Pamela Benporath is an artist living and working in Durban, South Africa./ Pamela Benporath reside e trabalha em Durban, Africa do Sul.

Born in Pretoria in 1966, she matriculated in 1983 from Clapham High School in Pretoria. She studied graphic design at Pretoria Technikon, and has a BVA from University of South Africa.
